The Color of Our Sky – Amita Trasi

“There must be something about pain, about the way it touches you so deeply that sometimes you never get back to being the person you once were.”

This book will touch your heart. After 11 years away Tara travels back to India, to search for a young girl, Mukta, who was kidnapped while staying with Tara’s family. This story is gripping. I did not want keep down this book because I wanted to know what happened next. There was a continuous switch between Tara and Mukta’s point of view. Every chapter was of a different year which got my interest even more.

It’s a beautiful book that not only depicts the familial bond that two people share despite not being family but the hope that can spring in the unlikeliest place, and how grief and pain can change a person. And how not giving up is perhaps the most courageous thing a person can do. To be able to understand the life of people, the victims of human trafficking, sex trade, child abuse was truly heartbreaking.

The book started out fantastic, vivid and enriched with detail. The setting was well-developed, the characters real and wonderful. I loved reading each of Tara and Mukta’s recollections as they grew up together.

“It was Mukta who taught me the sky was like a stage where clouds formed characters, morphed into different shapes, and drifted toward each other. It told us more stories than we could have ever read, more than our imaginations could afford.”

This book is full of emotions and depicts the value of relationships, of friendship, sisterhood, parenthood, and most of all, humanity. The story was fast paced, the writing style was beautiful and a 100% recommendation to all. But be warned, it has an achingly beautiful story.
